Short videos of Your Actions in FreeCEN2 #1078

Short video explaining the buttons and what they do e.g. "this is where you go if you want to send a message to your coordinator, or to any other member of the FreeCEN project'...

Comms video story on System wide (cross-project)

Glad to see this story. Rather than a single video explaining all buttons which would take too long to produce and perhaps be just as daunting. We should perhaps make a series of short videos following the outline in https://docs.google.com/document/d/18BFuneT2bjbqaQGfT3QLUVW-cCE_ZRPD_RcgpTm3CIE/edit#heading=h.szfug6z51yfg

Even that outline may be too theoretical and aimed at people new toCEN.

For existing transcriber we just need a video that shows them. How to login, access their files, upload a file and replace a file . A second one on How to use the report (s) produced by CSVProc. These 2 would cover 90% of the demand and what 90% of our volunteers will be doing. Then we need to add one on the new spreadsheets and fields etc etc

Awaiting Anna to register on live site as Technical and have correct access to actions to be able to make the videos.

1881 is a good year. Not too many fields at that time and it is friendly to users of the FC1 spreadsheets. Geoff

@geoffj-FUG where do you feeel the urgency is on (missing) videos? Is it Coords actions, or how Coords can communicate with their teams? Or ????

I think that an Introduction Video which is available on the Volunteer page would be useful. This would describe what being a FreeCEN transcription volunteer is about. It could precis the Introduction to New Transcribers Guide that we put onto the Handbooks Page on CSVP{roc last week. (It also went to Coordinators via the Coordinators Message Board). No detail, just perhaps an overview and a transcriber saying how they enjoy transcribing. (It could go on Facebook too as a promotion?

An alternative is the process sequence from page 57 of the Full Handbook called From Transcription to Incorporation. This is the bread and butter process for a Coordinator.

Just a couple of ideas.

The video on the volunteering page is a nice idea, and needed in the medium term - for now the support for Coords is more important.

Pat I would say that the Coordinators process sequence from page 57 of the Full Handbook called From Transcription to Incorporation is the most important area for Coordinators. This is the bread and butter process for a Coordinator. Geoff

Sorry, Geoff, don't quite understand your last message - how does this refer to making vidoes of actions (that we should wait on gazateer use until the improvements are in place perhaps?)

So, next video is "From Transcription to Incorporation" (pg57). Each section to be recorded separately and later combined.

Some ideas of what this may include (bearing in mind that we likely need 2 of these - one for brand new volunteers and one for those migrating from FC1).

  1. Using the system (Action buttons)
  2. Accessing spreadsheet (different for the 2 target audiences)*
  3. Completing spreadsheet (transcribing)
  4. Testing spreadsheet
  5. Uploading
  6. What happens next (different for the 2 target audiences)

Troubleshooting tips throughout (Message system, using place search, mailgroup, COORD, Guiding Principles section)

In what to do when you have transcribed a piece It is suggested that the Warnings Report be selected. - We now have a newer report called No POB Warnings. This is specifically designed for transcribers as it removes all the Warnings that do not affect them.

CSV will email a report to the transcriber - If the blue message is still at the top of the screen refresh the screen.

Locate the file to be Proofread in your file list - Proofread has a specific meaning in FreeCEN. I suggest that this be amended to Select the file reported on in your file list.

Error messages can be accessed from the Errors button adjacent to the Show button.

The view flags is a proofreader function rather than a transcriber function.

Replace the Example of a report with the simpler No POB Warnings report. It is easier to read.
