Email sent as follows: Ali

That sounds like a simple solution.

I assume that the returns were sent to Whitehall as they would have been secret information. We need a Place Name added to the Gazetteer of Royal Navy LND with the Whitehall Coordinates. They will all link to that. I have attached a spreadsheet with the Gazetteer entry on it as it is Chapman Code LND.

Kirk, There is an entry in the Gazetteer for Chapman Code RNS which is Royal Navy but geolocated at Portsmouth. It looks as if it was generated by the PARMS. It is on the Gazetteer spreadsheet in red at the moment as it was an item for me to revisit. Can we remove it please? RNS is not a genuine Chapman Code and we certainly do not use it. CSVProc will not accept it. The entry on the spreadsheet attached will replace it. Any links can be moved to the new entry. (These are probably the same links as I have asked Ali to list below).

Ali, can you make a list of piece numbers involved, and send them to Rhoda to add Royal Navy as a Civil Parish to those pieces in the PARMS please? They may already be linked to the RNS entry. I will leave this to Kirk, Rhoda and yourself to finalise and you to coordinate.

That should make everything work properly and will resolve part of #1288 and will remove one block to the story. It is a different issue to the associated issue of searching for ships. Geoff

RNS exists as a Chapman code and therefore acts like a county. It is there because it is a subseries within TNA just like Military MIL

It has one place located at Portsmouth.

It has a number of Parms extracted from TNA e.g. attached images

The ship's names are civil parishes

RNS exists as a county for the Birth and Search; but is not visible for searches as there are no records.

I cannot see how you can eliminate it RNS.png RNS1.pngrnstna.png rns2.png rns3.png

I see no reason to eliminate or take any action

All shipping images we have are 1861.

I have 34 files either transcribed or needing transcribing.

Royal Navy and Merchant in my list from Brenda are all under CHP EWS.

I can't go any further as there are no shipping civil parish lists for 1861.

Additionally, CEN1 shipping parishes are stated to be "the place where census was lodged", not the name of the ship.

Captainkirkdawson commented 2 years ago

@geoffj-FUG @suffolkroots The parameter structure of Freecen2 is based on TNA holdings, not images we have . The EWS does not exist on TNA and is an artifact of Freecen1 which we carried over into Freecen2 Royal Navy holdings exist on TNA for all years from 1861 through 1911 Merchant shipping at sea and in ports abroad, and from British ships in home ports exists only in 1861. If we have images for RG 9/4433 through RG 9/4441 then these should be transcribed and loaded into Chapman code RNS where the structure exists. I expect that the ship names will have to be added as Civil Parishes. It is totally illogical to remove RNS. This is my last comment on this story. Any other comments/ work will have to be the responsibility of my replacement

@geoffj-FUG could you forward Ali's email to me, as I don't seem to have had it.
