"sometimes the wife did use her maiden name and like everything else in FreeCEN it was entered “as is”. Sometimes both her married name and maiden name were entered e.g. “Smith or Jones” and this would be entered as Smith / Jones. If you are saying we omit the backslash now and just put a space will both names be indexed? Will old records with the backslash still be recognised?"
This means that our blocking the use of / in the Surname field will need to be amended to allow the entry.
It also means that we need to include a method o searching either side of the / in FC2 searching.
The fact that not allowing / did not raise a query from Kirk when we wrote the rules suggests that this ability my have been lost between FC1 and FC2. This will need to be checked by a programmer.
So there are 2 issues here - using a / in Scotland Surnames and searching.
