This was intentional. These characters appear against Gaelic versions of place names. The Gaelic versions of place names were imported into the Gazetteer. Broad text was supposed to be extended to allow for these characters to be typed by trascribers. However, Kirk left before it was implemanted. Geoff
Needs to be completed when/if Ireland becomes extant

Irish characters not displaying correctly. See attached screenshot. For example Kilmoon. See Wikipedia for the correct Irish name display. I think the problem is that the page encoding is UTF-8, but the name is encoded in Unicode. This may be a general problem.

In September 2019 Kirk said “Have added code to ensure conversion to UTF-8. Tested on my development setup”. Story #725.
When Kirk became ill there were many balls in the air. Some have been collected and resolved. Others bounced away and hid under the furniture. I know that UTF-8 was one of these balls.
The significance of this initiative being missed was not obvious to me. Now I understand why this was just one of the many initiatives being worked on concurrently.
From my knowledge it was certainly one that was to be achieved.
Do you want to create the story, or shall I?
Geoff

Probably best if you create the story Geoff. (If the amended code was only on Kirk’s local setup we may have to start again with the solution.) Anne

Odd characters appearing in alternative place names, e.g. those with accents in Irish Gaelic names. Anne to try to find a way to identify these and do a an easy fix. Also worth looking at placenames too just in case. Rhoda
