Cannot calculate a priority

At the Nottingham Conference, it came clear to me that if we are to get others to cooperate with us, then we need to be more supportive of them. At present we have Church fields to hold information on other websites. But they are not displayed prominently. So I suggest that in the Search Results listing, whenever anyone highlights an entry, a pop-up shows giving details of where to look further. I say "Where to look further", because website links are notorious for not working over time. So it would be much better to say in that field "This Church has a website. Visit it for more information." The researcher can then look it up on Google. We can also do the same at County level, and then perhaps get more cooperation from the Records Offices. Although we may have to say "This County has a Pay website." We just do not put this information in the face of the researcher and we need to do this if we are to get more cooperation. And when this is done, we need to put articles in magazines and on social media asking for this information.

I don't disagree with the idea of crediting source providers, but I do question whether it will result in much greater cooperation. As you've pointed out in other stories, ROs and FHSs are going into commercial arrangements more and more with the likes of Ancestry and FMP. These sites have pop-ups when you access search results acknowledging the provider and we could certainly do a similar thing, but I doubt it will be enough to halt the trend of selling their data rather than donating. (Not a reason not to try though - just my observation). Putting articles in magazines and on social media is a good idea.

Too broad to understand what if anything is to be done.
