Provide map showing "ancient" counties of the UK #1805

Open PatReynolds opened 5 years ago

PatReynolds commented 5 years ago

Eric D wrote (on #179) We have been asked if we could provide a map of the UK (as it exists now before Scotland leaves?!!!) because overseas researchers are not very good at UK geography. They could then click on the county that they want to check out.

(split from #179 for clarity of tasks)

"They could then click on the county that they want to check out." - why don't they just click on Nottinghamshire in the search form? Or do you mean 'see which neighboring counties they could check out"? A simple static map of ancient counties would solve this eg the marked up one further down this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_counties_of_England

You have assigned to me. What do you want me to do? ED

richpomfret commented 5 years ago

Wouldn't it make sense to include a time/year 'slider' for this to show how counties or regions have changed over time? A static map might be fine, but we might want to consider how else we might use a map if we include one and if it is interactive e.g. ability to click on a region, or show any details about it which my help inform on a search. There are quite a few map related stories after all.

are you meaning: do something like the georeferenced Website of the National Library of Scotland? https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=5&lat=56.0000&lon=-4.0000&layers=1&b=1

PatReynolds commented 5 years ago

@edickens you started issue #179 (Provide a Map to enable access to the correct places in the DAP and show coverage) which had two issues in the description, this one, and the one in the title. So I split this issue out from that one, as they seem very different. Can you confirm that the issue is now correctly described? And would a link to the georeferenced site at NLoS be a good solution? Or would a simple map of counties be better?

Sherlock21 commented 5 years ago

Using links to other sites seemed to have been voted to be not a good idea earlier on in this story - before it got sub divided into 2.

I have no problem with this. ED

richpomfret commented 5 years ago

To combine or be part of story for showing transcription coverage?

Mostly as a note-to-self:

For Northern Ireland open data mapping: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/osni-open-data-product-list
