Define requirements for FreeRegOnlineTranscriptionTool (FROTT) #2329

Open richpomfret opened 4 years ago

richpomfret commented 4 years ago

To begin putting together a document outlining our key requirements and functionality required for the FreeRegOnlineTranscriptionTool (FROTT) e.g. to mirror what WinREG does within a browser.

Eric suggests that as a first thing, the volunteer developer should contact Jo and do the training programme (unless already a FreeREG transcriber)

Discussion in progress with Steve

PatReynolds commented 3 years ago

Volunter should do the Training course as an initial task.

How frequently do we anticipate the transcriber uploading to the quality control / publication processes? Every session? At the end of the register? An encouragement for ‘regular’ processing even if not finished / no matter how little transcribed?

edickens commented 3 years ago

WinReg saves a backup version of the csv file whenever the transcriber logs out of the program. So a temporary csv file nees to be saved. But this is not what you are asking. We have a system now when the transcriber uploads and then clicks a button to say "I've finished" at which time the SC is sent an emaili so as to check their work and give them more. So this is the time when the csv file needs to be processed and added to the database by the FROTT. If we adopt this system, then there needs to be a report for any work that does not get signed off after being inactive for a few days. It would be easy for the transcriber not to have said that they are finished. At present this is not a problem because every upload goes into the database as the transcriber only uploads when they have checked what they have done.

Transcribers work in different ways - some transcribe the entire register before they upload, others upload and replace as they go along so it varies. I encourage more frequent uploads just in case their hard drive crashes, but ultimately it's up to them.

PatReynolds commented 3 years ago

What (if any) quality control features are to be part of FROTT (and what is best left to / an enhancement of the current quality control in place on FreeREG?

@Pat to add in points from story #1751, check and hand over to @richpomfret

edickens commented 3 years ago

Ideally FROTT should also allow Entry GAPs (not missing Registers) to be created as transcribing is done. It is a bit of pain to have to go back and create the GAP entries after transcribing. It is much better, when a GAP is found, to just be able to select an Option, enter the year range, and then carry on transcribing. The FROTT will know all the other fields needed to create the GAP entry.
