Registered Researchers mailing list #576

Open edickens opened 9 years ago

edickens commented 9 years ago

Registered researchers to join a mailing list to feel part of the family and ask questions.

Could be an alternative view of the forum, and vice versa.

edickens commented 9 years ago

At present they send in Contact reports, but many are of interest to everyone. We have Twitter and Facebook, but these are open to the world. Our mailing lists (and we should also have Transcriber, Coordinator and Management lists) will be very specific and closed. We can reduce the access to non-registered users and so cut the management workload. Sending messages to these mailing lists should be integrated with the UserID profiles so that it is not necessary to manually maintain them. (I have to do this for every new person who registers.) E

Emails might go via Sendgrid, for enhancing design, and cutting down on bounces, etc.

Could be done through groups.io

SteveBiggs commented 4 years ago

It could but it would be better if they registered within FreeREG. This would make it easier to keep current and enable efficient communications such as automatically telling them if a parish they're interested in has become available. We already have a role called "Researchers".

Captainkirkdawson commented 4 years ago

If it is a pure forum or information exchange then group.io or similar is appropriate. We do not use our message system for such. Such people would still have to register with our applications to receive any specialist service and as @SteveBiggs notes we have had such a role defined for years

edickens commented 4 years ago

I still run the Transcribers mail group but, although I invite every new registration to join, only about 25% do, and quite a few unsubscribe. It has stayed steady at around 430 for a few years. But the real problem is that it requires a manual link between the website and this group. And without everyone on it, it is of no use for sending out system messages. I think a lot of researchers would like to join this group as there is a lot of discussion on register entries and how to find them. We need to link this to the Patron idea. But people must be able to opt out of certain aspects of the discussions rather than opting out of the group as a whole.

PatReynolds commented 4 years ago

As @Captainkirkdawson surmises, this is just for a discussion group, asking for and giving help with research.

PatReynolds commented 4 years ago

@SteveBiggs people would register in www.freereg.org.uk (they'd need to, to get the benefits of being a registered researcher) - invitation to sign up to a family history discussion group would be an optional extra.
