Volunteer contribution metrics #146

Find way(s) to measure contribution of volunteers to Free UK Genealogy projects

Needed by FreeUKGen/Coordination#765

archerbarrie commented 7 years ago

It is unclear what the scope of "volunteers" is but if it refers to transcribers, for FreeBMD please see http://www.freebmd.org.uk/db-latest.shtml

PatReynolds commented 6 years ago

Toggle not appropriate (for Foundation). Use time-of-transcription? Time logged into systems?

archerbarrie commented 6 years ago

Could we please have comments constructed so we can have a meaningful discussion. It is unclear how any of the above (even where they are understandable) are an answer to the original request.

An idea: https://www.charitydigitalnews.co.uk/2018/06/19/why-volunteers-deserve-a-digital-badge/?utm_source=Technology%20Trust&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=9587872_CDN%20Newsletter%2020th%20June&dm_i=O,5PI1S,LUUAUL,M83JS,1

Foundation volunteers = volunteers working on social media, google applications and similar (i.e. not transcribers, developers or volunteer project managers.

DeniseColbert commented 6 years ago

Pat - I really like that idea, but may be more suited to story FreeUKGen/Coordination#741

Barrie- also, Toggl is a browser app that can be used to track work.

archerbarrie commented 6 years ago

The idea of recognising achievement (as in comment 5) has been raised before and received a generally negative reception from FreeBMD transcribers. The point made was that everyone's contribution was valuable and valued and because someone couldn't commit as much time as others they should not be seen as "inferior".

This presumably also applies to Toggl (and Pat said Toggle not Toggl) with the addition complication that it has a big brother element to it.

I still don't know why the information at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/db-latest.shtml is not useful/sufficient. But then, of course, I have no idea what this story is trying to achieve.

DeniseColbert commented 6 years ago

The digital badge is something that may be good for Foundation volunteers specifically (and possibly FreeREG/FreeCEN depending on their receptivity), not as you say, for FreeBMD.

Need to create stories from July AB

Sherlock21 commented 4 years ago

I would suggest with respect, that you don't bring this idea anywhere near to FreeREG

SteveBiggs commented 4 years ago

@DeniseColbert by 'Foundation volunteers', do you mean volunteers who have been part of the project since it first started or something different?

suffolkroots commented 4 years ago

Those who are paid wish to inflict this big-brother system upon those who are not? Interesting. I find the monthly FreeREG stats more than enough thankyou.

DeniseColbert commented 4 years ago

@Sherlock21 @suffolkroots Metrics of volunteer contribution are required by grant funders. We would not be looking to log the contribution of individual transcribers, but we need to be able to provide the information for projects and the overall organisation.

@SteveBiggs Foundation volunteers = volunteers working on social media, google applications and similar (i.e. not transcribers, developers or volunteer project managers).

We had some suggestions for different ways we can arrive at "best guess" figures in an advisory board meeting. There were volunteers on the board from all 3 projects, but those from FreeBMD and FreeREG stepped down and we had no response to requests for replacements. If any volunteers would like to join the advisory board, we would be glad to have you/them.

@archerbarrie on https://www.freebmd.org.uk/db-latest.shtml, are the transcribers who uploaded 0 entries (39 on that page according to ctrl+F) included in the figure for contributors (12485)? Also, if the overall figures are captured somewhere for previous uploads, how far back does this go?
