Improve markup of footer for all users #252

Closed AlOneill closed 2 years ago

I recently had reason to study the site footer: there is only one outright error (story FreeUKGen/FreeBMD2#518) on CEN and REG, and there is a second error on BMD (in the description list).

However, I finally worked out what has been bothering me most about the look of the footer — no unambiguous structural signposts. Looking into that has exposed a number of other things that could be improved for all our users.

Without updating any SCSS/CSS files, the markup could be adjusted in a few places to tweak the layout, without changing the overall look.

In the image, any link without a visible warning otherwise, would open in the same tab (unless a user chooses to use the context menu). Apologies for the missing social media icons (cannot recall how to set that up).

Do we want to keep both links to FreeUKGenealogy News? If not, which one do we keep?

AlOneill commented 2 years ago

All the links in the footer have the attribute rel="noreferrer". As I understand the noreferrer keyword, it is useful if the link is to a site that is not trusted, but otherwise unnecessary, even a little bonkers for an internal link (and it distorts the target site's analytics). So, do we keep noreferrer on the social media links and/or the PDF (a Google Doc) or do we delete them all?

Am I missing something? This is not something that I feel confident to decide without input from others.

Make the Free UK Genealogy News link in the 'Follow us' section go to the Newsletter Signup on Wordpress site (in due course).

Discussed using the FUG hexagons as the image - may not work. Vino sent possible icon to Alison.
