Add a 'search by keyword' to the Help. #269

Open PatReynolds opened 2 years ago

DeniseColbert commented 2 years ago

@Vino-S to investigate how we could do this.

DeniseColbert commented 2 years ago

Ask some Coords if this is needed, how it could work

PatReynoldsFUG commented 2 years ago

On FreeREG the Transcribers have links at the bottom of the main help page.

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

That's true @PatReynoldsFUG but there are still items buried within those links that would benefit from a search by keyword IMHO.

AlOneill commented 2 years ago

@SteveBiggs Yes, a way of searching for keywords in the whole Transcriber Help section would be very useful. Until we can devise a way of making that happen … Could you give a couple of examples of "items buried within those links" that ought to be unearthed in some way? Thanks.

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

A simple example would be searching for information about the various 'Roles' within FreeREG. If I didn't know it was under 'Behind the Scenes', I could be searching for a long time to find it. I'm sure there are lots of similar examples.

Something I always have trouble finding is the table of Register Types - I can't find it now!

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

I finally found the table of Register Types & Codes under Transcriber Help->Entering data from registers :-)

AlOneill commented 2 years ago

@SteveBiggs Thank you for those. They are both simple to address: when I have a window, I will ensure that both "Register Type" and "Role" can be found with Ctrl/Cmd-F on "Information for transcribers".

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

Thanks @AlOneill . They were just two examples that immediately came to mind. What I'm looking for is a general keyword search so you could search for any word and a list of all pages/sections containing that word is returned.

Fyi, a search for 'Register Types' on "Information for transcribers" already brings up 2 results but neither links directly to the table of types.

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

Also, I would expect the table of Register Types to be more appropriately accessible somewhere under "Information for Coordinators" since they are generally specified by coords. That's where I start looking when I've forgotten where it is and why it takes so long to find it!

AlOneill commented 2 years ago

@SteveBiggs Noted!! A general keyword search would require programming to be manageable and reliable, but you probably realise that.

AlOneill commented 2 years ago

@SteveBiggs Link to the actual page (!) added to "Info for Coords" :

and also to current DRAFT Info for transcribers.

"Roles" requires more thought … and time …

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

Where have you added this @AlOneill ? I don't see it on the live site.

AlOneill commented 2 years ago

@SteveBiggs It's on t3: https://test3.freereg.org.uk/cms/information-for-coordinators

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

Thanks @AlOneill

SteveBiggs commented 2 years ago

I wouldn't worry about doing anything with "Roles" as that is easy to find - I just used it as a simple example to explain my request.

DeniseColbert commented 2 years ago

Could Google provide a search bar that only searches our website?

DeniseColbert commented 2 years ago

@Vino-S to contact lemon about getting the code for the search function to see if it can be 'used' for this.

Search bar on this page: https://www.freeukgenealogy.org.uk/search
