I started to watch this repo now, but if you want other @FreifunkBremen members like @jplitza, @oliver, @xmorpheus and @Timi7007 to chime in, you need to tag them. I also would also appreciate @xf- voting.
mesh-collector
respondd-collector
mesh-informant
The name should not be related to the protocol, because we might switch from respondd to something else in the future.
node-info-collector
I prefer node-info-collector (to mesh-collector) as it is the most (more) accurate one. We are not collecting info from the mesh, but from the nodes and compile it into data about the mesh.
Some fancy names might be fun, but I also prefer meshviewer over hopglass, for accuracy, which in my opinion is often lacking in software names.
I don't like names that are long and hard to pronounce.
As this is our only software containing collector
in its name, we will probably just call it that. We are already doing it sometimes. But as a full name, it would definitively be nice to have something self-explanatory.
(And what is the problem with using NoInCo?^^)
collectd is not bad, but it already exists.
Is this piece of software a daemon? I wasn't aware...
Every service that runs in the background is a kind of "daemon".
M.o.n.i.c. online node info collector
online could be any other word with o
like omni
also works for tonic
, ionic
or something with an other second letter like cynic
, panic
and manic
ANIC: Another Node Info Collector.
YaNIC: yet another node info collector
Even if I like MoNIC for obvious purposes, I prefer YaNIC. It sounds nice, sounds like a brother of Alfred and captures the description of the software. I look forward to using this name while imagining our community Yanik to run to every node collecting information :-)
@Yannoik Thoughts?
New favorit without any vote against it - do we have a new name :) Should we create a PR for renaming and rename this repository?
YaNIC, YANIC, Yanic, or yanic?
No idea, i would like some upper- and some lowercase letters decide you @corny
I don't like YANIC and Yanic. YaNIC has the advantage to reflect the full title more correctly, but yanic is easier to write time and time again. I would prefer YaNIC and we'll probably just yanic when we're lazy.
That's a strange title case. Why would the "another" be small?
yanic
YANIC
Yanic
yaNIC
YaNIC
no idea @jplitza
@ll please vote
There are 27 combinations of upper- and lowercase you did not post. 😜 It seems that Yanic is the consensus.

Yet another node info collector
:+1: -> now lets make a PR (i rename the repo now)
@jplitza You're right, YaNIC has a weird title case. I wanted to write the "important" letters NIC in uppercase and the rest in lowercase but wanted to start the name with a uppercase letter...
I'm happy we didn't resort to separating each letter with a .
.
I just realized we never considered something with "go", which is very common for software written in go^^
maybe we rewrite it in c pls not
Please suggest new names for this sofware - one name per comment. Use :+1: and :-1: to place your votes.
