evolution of #336 and #337 (just now realising adding commits will trigger travis again)

it's been staring me in the face, but the lowest version of Symfony in the unit tests doesn't have a corresponding phpunit package

considering deprecating that version

turns out Symfony 2 is not supported, they are dropping bug fixes for it here - https://symfony.com/roadmap/2.8
