Newbie-proofed install guidance!

OK Linux Mint 11 / Linux Newbie... opened this 'issue' to elicit your 
experienced help... and request clearer guidance on install process.

End result is...

Newbie confusion!

What steps will reproduce the problem?
--------------------------------------
1.Installed the command sp-sc-auth in /usr/lib
2.Have copied the pre-requisite objects from libstdcpp5.tgz in /usr/lib
3.Ran the ppa, unable to open any 'Sopcast' channels.  
Errors indicate Mozilla Firefox doesnt recognise 'sop'as above...
Sopcast-player.svg is in /home/sopcast-player - may be my problem; I extracted 
from 'download' area - how do I / where should I direct the output - (clearer 
instruction for newbie...or I need to do more homework!)

well, then I tried to fix it...can undo all this if you can help with above 
point 3..
4. Added about:config network.protocol-handler.app.sop;sopcast
Unable to open a Sopcast channel
5. Changed above about:config Mozilla string to ;sopcast-player.svg
(Desperate move with hindsight :-) Unable to open a Sopcast channel
6. Returned to install information,to get install errors identified above. 

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

- Operable with sopcast channels is what I want; 
- What I get is... "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the 
protocol (sop) isn't associated with any program." & the install errors...

- Would like clearer guidance on Linux install of sopcast/player for a newbie
- And a bit of expert help, because I shouldnt be here!

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Sopcast player 0.7.2  version, with Sopcast 3.2.6 Linux  
Linux Mint 11 / 
Mozilla 7.01 / Mozilla for Linux Mint 1.0

You will have to install from source, launchpad is only for Ubuntu users, sorry.
