The game (counting both of them as one huge mess of a port) can't be considered "totally playable" (on any platform - your issue also randomly happened with the PS3 version) as it exhausts its address space even with LAA (it's a 32 bit game). Before FAudio was a thing it was already extremely problematic, but with FAudio it got worse.
Since all of this happens on windows too (to a lesser extent due to not having as much address space taken by compat layers) the best thing to do, if you can, is asking for a refund. You're better off grabbing PS2 copies and running them through PCSX2 (and you'd get actual face animations as a bonus :frog: ).
In my experience, the 4GB patcher doesn't even run in Wine :v But I can't convince myself to play it with no audio (the even restarting the game multiple times doesn't fix, despite other user reports) :skull_and_crossbones:
Having to resort to the original PS2 versions because of the sad port and etc is rather irritating though :/
I can't agree more..
(The open-source controller-usable custom FFX/X-2 launcher doesn't work at all, in addition) (I found out about it at the pcgamingwiki website)

For some reason, running the game loads it without any sound, beyond the initial opening, and to the main menu. I haven't touched it further than that because I expected it would just continue to be muted but it's quite a distressing issue
EDIT: This is also the case with FFX-2 for some reason
