If you open and close the thaumonomicon after you complete the metallurgy, transmutation will render, but crash the game if you click on it.

Missed this due to /tc research command usage

remove everything else, one of your core mods might crash with thaumcraft itself. I want to rule that out.

It seems to be a rendering bug, as the crash report states

I understand that much, and all that rendering code is inside thaumcraft.

The bug occurs in the mod alone(no core mods)

For a bug: The title is exactly what is happening, nothing else. (another general rule of thumb, so that issues can be reasoned about much faster)

I'm trying to figure it out, but I don't think there's a situation where "Strange bug" is the correct description.

The strangeness was in the fact that the research unlocked early

I think I got it, I might have a typo in the name of the aspect.

If you want to try to fix it: the Aspects.java in thaumcraft API contains the names. assets/thaumic_arcana/research/metal_transmutation.json contains the research (this is the only thing in that) The "required_items" entry will contain the defected phial.
