Rakefile fixes #267

Contains a number of items.

running rake now completes without any unit test failures :) always write hintpath using \ not / support Runners calling linux shell scripts

Somehow I never got an email about this PR and I just pushed 3.0 to master...I'm going to have to dig into this one a little more.
