Google Meet Grid View Not Working #292

Closed uncrnldy closed 4 years ago

uncrnldy commented 4 years ago

Describe what is broken The Google Meet Grid View will only show me, it fails to show who is speaking, and it no matter what I try it won't show me everyone in the meeting. It wasn't like this back in May when it was working great.

Expected behavior I expect to see everyone in the meeting including myself if I wish, now I just see myself and that isn't what I want or need.

Screenshots I didn't take any.

Software used:

Additional context This was my go-to extension from March to April. Now it's worthless junk. I don't know what happened, but someone needs to fix it as thousands of teachers need this working NOW! (I hope this makes you happy @Eagle-Man)

Good grief don't people google anything before posting here? We're seeing a post like this almost every day. This extension is effectively abandoned. The author didn't do anything and it's not his responsibility to fix what Google did. Google keeps changing Meet itself and something they did made Grid View stop working. This is a free unsupported extension. If you must have Grid view then switch to Zoom or Teams - it's just not a feature of Meet. Our school is considering switching. There's also an unofficial Fix version of Grid View which works on Chrome. That said, what Chris Gamble does NEED to do is free the source code so that other people can fix it, since he can't or won't update it himself. Then whenever it breaks again because Google updates something, someone else can fix it.

This works for me: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-meet-grid-view-fix/dakebdbeofhmlnmjlmhjdmmjmfohiicn?hl=en

Maybe Fugiman got covid-19... let's hope not.

Do you have to be so rude? I did try the "Fix" as you mentioned but it didn't work. As I said, it worked back in May, but now it's not working at all and my best guess is that the most recent update caused a glitch. You don't think I've got enough going on already. I'm testing out different extensions to find the ones that work best for large groups of kids. I came here hoping the problem with the Grid extension could be fixes, not to be insulted by you. Perhaps in the future you can learn to be a little nicer.

I have a one-minute video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTUE4siUNg0 that I shared with teachers at my school. Feel free to share that with your schools. The description in that video includes a link to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-meet-grid-view-fix/dakebdbeofhmlnmjlmhjdmmjmfohiicn?hl=en. (The video mentions that the link was Emailed to teachers.)

@uncrnldy Before you comment on others being rude, perhaps you should consider your own conduct:

@gwaters581 You probably (perhaps by accident) hit the subscribe button to this thread, so you are receiving an update when there's a new comment. If you don't want it, follow the instructions to unsubscribe.

@Eagle-Man Excuse me... but my comment wasn't aimed at you. I was speaking to @FunkyBrewster and what I said was true... this extension was wonderful and worked great... now it's basically worthless. If you are the one who can fix this extension... then awesome and I'll retract my comment. If not, then take a step back please. The Google Meet Grid was my go-to extension and I had told lots of my friends about it. Sadly, now they think it's terrible as it no longer works right. My purpose in posting here was to get someone... ANYONE to fix this.

Oh, and why @Eagle-Man aren't you snapping at @FunkyBrewster for what he said in his post about someone getting COVID-19? Or do you just pick and choose who you attack?

@Bravissimo594 Thank you for sharing this video. I'll give it a try.

@uncrnldy everyone understands your frustration about the broken extension and you're not alone. However, your demand to fix the app that was, basically, created by someone in their free time, without being paid for the work and without you paying a penny, doesn't look nice.

If you're qualified to fix the app, try to do this. If you're not, find a way to help to fix it - whether by looking among your friends or students, or paying someone to fix the app (also, note, there is a "Sponsor" button in the top right corner of the screen). GitHub is not a technical support forum, but an open source community. Creating duplicated tickets about the same problem also doesn't help, but only adds work for the maintainer to look through them and close the duplicates. Which is daunting and demotivating.

uncrnldy commented 4 years ago

@astax-t First off, if I were qualified to fix the app, don't you think I would have done it by now? I had praised this extension all though March, April, and May. I found this to be the single best extension I had used. Then, I come back in August and now it's malfunctioning in ways that were nothing short of frustrating. My "demand" to have this fixed wasn't just for me but for hundreds of teachers who have used this in the past and will potentially use this in the future. I had no idea this was being done by anyone for free, but since many teachers do the same thing, I guess you understand how we feel.

As for the duplicated tickets, that's not my fault as sadly, there are several that I saw AFTER I posted my initial problem. I don't see you going after others who made other snide comments, only me. Fine. Just understand that I was upset and frustrated that something that at one time was working so well I honestly thought it was better than "sliced bread" becomes broken and doesn't work right really disappointed me. Also, many of the so-called solutions are not working or are missing a critical step to get things to work right. If you all are so thinned-skinned you can't take some criticism and frustration from users, maybe you shouldn't be doing this.

I did ask that someone fix the problem on behalf of hundreds of teachers, especially since this has been an issue since June or July as I learned in trying to fix this myself. Clearly, someone should have addressed this sooner.

As for this site, I honestly thought it was a forum to notify developers of problems with their extensions and applications. I have since been corrected. Just know I only came here through the links Google provided. I seen now it's a forum to be attacked when you don't post what other people like to see.

Final note, others have stated that someone needs to fix this problem. Or should I say they have "demanded" this be fixed. Either way, this is a problem that needs to be fixed as many users aside from teachers have and will continue to need this to work properly. Especially when the competition (i.e. Zoom) has it working in their platform. I cannot use Zoom per my district guidelines so I need this to work properly like others. I do hope that I have actually figured out how to fix this so I can ignore any future comments aside from "Hey, we got it fixed everyone!" that I'm truly hoping to see soon.

Goodness me you are entitled.

Goodness me you are entitled.

@tankrizzo And you're a jerk.

I closed this because it was brought to my attention this was a duplicate complaint. I came here becasue I thought it was a forum for getting problems fixed. I know know that it's not. However, the fact that you feel the need to bother me in the first place proves how mistaken I was. How does my trying to bring to the attention of whomever is responsible that there is a problem make me entitled? Sadly, the problem still exists and despite every fix I have tried, nothing has worked. I have hence uninstalled the extensions and will just accept that this will not be working any time soon.

Truthfully, I do hope this gets fixed and soon for all who relied on it.
