I try and play pico but it doesnt let me even open the character selection thing

Have you beaten Weekend 1 on your current save file? If not, then this feature is working as intended.

The initial release of the Playable Pico update had a bug where Pico was always newly unlocked. Now things work as intended, requiring you to beat Weekend 1 to unlock him. There have been a few instances where Newgrounds save files would reset, so that might require you to beat Weekend 1 again.
