Application doesn't work on android #3

there are some issues with this example app. Should test it on android as well as ios, perhaps upgrade libraries?

I've posted some details on a fix for this in the forum, linked above, and mentioned some other details that could be updated as the code is a bit out of date for the latest versions of flutter now.
