No Windows UI! #359

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Describe your system:
 - Operating System (be specific): MicroXP .83
 - Machine type (32-bit or 64-bit): AMD 64bit
 - Mupen64Plus version: 1.99.3
 - Plugins used: Whatever CuteMupen .0.0.6 used

For visual artifacts, give:
- game name and CRC/MD5 hash (printed on console)
- description of the artifact (missing polygons, flashing, wrong colors,
etc)

Describe the problem:

Well, I finally got to run the emulator, which was nice, but it wouldn't
open a zip file. Which seems ridiculous, this is 2010. In addition, I
couldn't config my joystick and I struggled to play Mario Kart, which I'm
generally very good at. I have to concede that the emulation seemed
flawless, however I did not play long with the janky control scheme that no
part of the CuteMupen .0.0.6 config would let me alter. I think mainly the
problem is that Mupen64plus has no UI. It's not flawless, but you could
steal the design of either Project 64 or 1964, or even previous Mupens, and
have something much more usable. Then you could have more people giving
you data before 2.0.

Just an idea.

Please provide any additional information below.

This all makes little sense, first you whine on no zip support, then it looks
like
you request a GUI that should come with Mupen64Plus, but then you talk about
CuteMupen which is a third party project, and you should obviously request
features
on the CuteMupen page if you want a feature for it, not here.

Mupen64plus comes with the console UI which works just fine although it makes it
harder to configure things like the controls it's far from impossible, you'll
have to
edit the config file though:

D:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Mupen64Plus\mupen64plus.cfg

under the [Input-SDL-Control1] in that config file.

The SDLJoyTest is useful to get the name of the button you press so it can be
added
to the config:

Mupen64Plus is now an N64 emulator shared library which may be integrated into
other
software systems, and does not have its own UI. The Mupen64Plus-UI-Console
program
is a free command-line only application which runs the Mupen64Plus emulator, to
show
the quality of the emulator core and serve as an example for other front-end
authors.
There are a handful of different GUI front-end projects which are in various stages
of early development, listed here:

http://code.google.com/p/mupen64plus/wiki/ThirdPartyPlugins

These projects are beyond the scope of the Mupen64Plus emulator team; I
recommend
that you contribute to these projects if you would like a better GUI.

You mean I have to go through a config file and edit it by hand? Just to play
Mario
Kart? I don't think I'll be spending my time on that. At this point nearly all
other emulators, including the old mupen builds are more usable for the end
user.
You are not going to get any beta testers without a front end, and consequently
2.0
isn't going to be very well vetted, and therefore will probably not work very
well.
What is the decision making process around here? This really makes no sense. I
tried every front end I could find today. Not one of them allowed me to
configure
the keys in a way that made games playable. As of March 26, 2010, the status of
Mupen64plus is FAIL.

What he means is rather that front-ends are not available *yet*. Many are under
development.

As of March 26, 2010, the status of Mupen64plus is FAIL. << lol to be failed,
mupen64plus has to be release...

As richard said, mupen64plus is more than a simple N64 emulator. He made an
impressive work to make this ugly emulator code a clean shared library. This
approach
will make the creation of another plugins very easy and I'm sur mupen64plus
will be
(and stay) THE N64 emulator for futur platform (homebrew, mobile, or anything
else).

About the Windows UI, insofar the API has changed (the question is not if this
mods
had to be done, they had to be done!), all UI has to be rewritted (and has auria
said, many are in dev).

So, m64p is not "FAIL", m64p 1.99.3 is very stable (for me anyway :D ) and
reached
his goal (wich is to be a multiplatform shared lib). And NOW, many can start to
write
GUI...

Look there:

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/9472/mupen64plusgui1.jpg

It's one of the most promising UI (and it's for Windows!).

N64 scene is a little "empty" so everyone has to be patient but I'm sur that
with all
that stuff made for now, m64p will continue to grow up!

About the "zip" function, it's not to the emulator to do that but to the GUI
(this is
seen that you don't understand the "mupen64plus new philosophy).

So, for now, the only advice I can give you is to be patient and wait. m64p
WILL be
the N64 emulator, on every platform, I'm sur of that!

Yes, but I want a pony NOW, daddy!!! No seriously, I appreciate what's being
done.
It seems like a quick front end for the major 3 OSes should be prioritized a
little
higher, but I am pumped, and can't wait to have Mupen64plus on my MyTouch.
Keep up
the good work. Can't wait to actually be able to use it.
