So What Happened? I've been under a rock the past 2 weeks.
Whew! What a fun and exciting 10 days! Let's review what happened with a quick timeline:
- March 21 at 13:24:12 EST - Reddit announces site-wife policy change
- March 21 at 14:14:49 EST - r/GunDealsAnnouncements is created as a "just in case" of policy change
- March 21 at 14:16:21 EST - r/GunDeals banned because violation of (recent change in) Reddit's site-wide policy
- March 22 at 21:45:02 EST - u/Nauticalmile informs community that we're developing our own website
- March 24 at 11:56:23 EST - Admins first acknowledge r/GunDeals moderators
- March 29 at 14:14:04 EST - Admins say "update soon"
- March 30 at 15:19:48 EST - Admins ask us to make clear our compliance with new site policy and if so will allow r/GunDeals back
- March 31 all day - communications between moderators and admins in order to ensure subreddit's compliance of new policy
- March 31 at 19:30:35 EST - Admins make r/GunDeals private so the mods can get to work housekeeping and prepping for launch
- April 1 at 09:00:00 EST - And on the 11th day, we rose. We're Back, Baby
Now you're all caught up on the r/GunDeals drama.
Policy Change And You r/GunDeals
So whether you believe the FOSTA thing messed with Reddit or it was Reddit being anti-gun, I'll give you a hint: nobody on r/GunDeals cares. Politics will be left at the door or you'll be banned, simple. We're back, let's keep it clean.
With the Reddit policy change comes some subreddit rule changes. Thankfully r/GunDeals was already in compliance with the policy change, but we need to stress certain rules and explicity state others. As such you'll find our newly polished rules in the sidebar as well as in the wiki. To give a brief overview here are some bullet points:
- Absolutely no peer-to-peer sales. This includes comments and posts. If you've got the item for sale on Armslist we don't want to know about it as this isn't a marketplace.
- Absolutely no eBay, GunBroker, Armslist, etc. This includes comments and posts. We cannot always verify that the person selling is a licensed retailer and/or has proper ATF documents. This means no more "case-by-case basis" will be allowed. They will always be denied.
- Absolutely no gift cards or referral sites. Always has been a rule, but now it will be even more enforced. Gift cards not only are not r/GunDeals, but also may enable peer-to-peer sales and the Admins would most certaintly not appreciate that.
In addition, we've got a couple things to stress to the community:
- Ensure you're dealing with reputable and licensed dealers. Many fly-by-night "startups" may come around and scam you of money and/or conduct illegal transactions. While the r/GunDeals moderators are setup to combat this as best as is possible it is ultimately the user's responsibility to ensure everything is checked out.
- Only licensed retailers are legally able to sell guns outside of private sales. r/GunDeals is not a private sale marketplace and as such only licensed dealers are authorized to have their websites posted to r/GunDeals.
Now What?
I don't know, things go back to normal? Probably want to get a new keyboard since I imagine some of you either smashed it in anger or broke your F5 button refreshing for any information. You'll need the F5 for all these sales coming up.
