Having materials in class may be enough. Why not start making with hands. Vernacular making is the most organic style. If there is paper, scissors, markers, whiteboard, etc, people will naturally begin to get creative.
Additionally, having a deadline for everyone to present projects ideas would force people to experiment and begin the making process.
"assignments" for trying scribus? making an icon? we do an inclass fontforge workshop or something? each weeks stuff then is used again/improved upon the following week?
Does having a linux box for everyone make this easier in the future?
