Upload/Transcribe Classroom discussions? #7

At the end of last weeks conversation it was noted that we should be trying to record/document what we talk about in the classroom. What would be the best way to do this? I'm going to see what I can cobble together from an audio recording perspective. Are there simple ways of turning audio into text? anyone want to look for an open source tool for doing that? Anyone want to help with this from a recording perspective? from a figuring out a better way of transcribing or documenting? should it be video? just audio? Any thoughts and or help are welcome.

@bjornmeansbear mentioned in #5 that he found a mic we may be able to use. Kristian, if you don't think that'll work well enough, I have a Zoom recorder I can bring in and might be able to scrounge up a legit microphone from Jason Sloan in the IA department if you want.

Not sure about the transcription bit; I'll wait and see if anyone else here wants to chime in and take that on.

Hey y'all! So I have a Behringer U-PHORIA UMC202HD interface, and an AKG C314 Condenser microphone / XLR cable we can use to record audio! We can even hit up an Open Source DAW like Audacity for the purposes of this class ;-) I'll check to see if we need any drivers installed on whichever computer we'll end up recording on.

As for the transcription...(https://blog.neospeech.com/top-5-open-source-speech-recognition-toolkits/) here is a random blog post from like two years ago with some open source speech recognition. Not really sure how reliable these could be, but it could be hilarious to see what these softwares think we're saying.

whoaaa nice @colemcdonnell what a pro!! let's def try out your recording setup (assuming @bjornmeansbear is on board). much better than the stuff we were scrounging together. are you able to bring the your equipment friday?

if you do, we can do a recording of the class and I can test out some of the transcription stuff you linked to on the audio files. Kaldi looks pretty promising.

Woah! Nice! Thanks @colemcdonnell yeah, you willing to bring that Friday and we can try a couple of things? Awesome! go team.

colemcdonnell commented 6 years ago

@bjornmeansbear @devinhalladay wooooo yeah, totally! I'll bring it all on Friday. it is a cardioid mic pattern so we'll have to position it in the general direction of the sound source, (I'm thinking over by where Kristian usually sits) but I think it'll work out perfectly.

I'll have another mic anyway, just incase, so we could do one on each side of the table or something as well. get some good coverage.

Actually, I can bring 2 extra mics — another to plug into the Behringer — it has 2 inputs right? and a USB one that might work in addition? try to cover three directions of sound recording?
