From Calvin: Are you aware of any large scale open design projects? By large scale I mean on the level of complexity as a piece of software. Does delegation and specialization work well? Do designers stay within thier tasks? Can a whole be achieved this way?

From Calvin: When the March for science was first being organized, I tried to contribute design work, but a select group of people had sealed off that role. Are there ways to encourage closed design communities to open?

What's it like to evangelize open source software & philosophies of openness at a company that has historically produced very closed software and file formats? What impact do you feel this type of role has on Adobe as a whole?

Calvin (via @bjornmeansbear) The best example of complex open source design I know of is Firefox's Photon Design System. I pinged @mart3ll and he relayed some insight: "We rebuilt the look of the browser within several pods of designers motion, content, menus, base UI - and it all came together because we first defined our design system and stuck to it religiously. Even though we had one year turnaround, doing that upfront research and principles definition really focused our work and the result has been very well received. all that said, much of the work was done by internal designers so not relying on an external group of contributors but now that the design system is in place, we have a design system governance group of specific folk internally on the UX team that are available to review any design contribution going forward, be it in extensions or patches to the browser itself. And all aspects of our design system have been thoroughly researchd/refined by our UX Research team through focus groups, on-site testing, etc. they played a big role Even my whimsical error page illustrations were tested and altered based on user feedback. all necessary up front work within a global project that hits users in so many locales"

@GarthDB @millenniallglyphs (« calvin!) Thanks — yeah, the photon system is a great reference! Thanks for the info direct from @mart311 as well!
