Electromagnet Switching #8

The Electromagnet that we are using to connect our payload to the launcher runs 15V @5A, meaning that we need to utilize a DC power supply to sufficiently power it. Eventually, we hope to find a way to power the magnet without the use of a power supply, but until then, we have to devise a way to switch the electromagnet on and off quickly and consistently. This poses a difficult issue, as any power switching device we use has to be able to withstand a 5A current, which isn't possible for most components we have in the lab.

Landed on MOSFET Power Transistor, struggling with overheating. Because the ON state is drawing 3.3V when it should be drawing at least 4V, the transistor is "hung" between ON and OFF, resulting in an incomplete power distribution. This results in the transistor overheating if it is in the ON position at 5V for more then about 30 sec. Luckily, 30 sec is about the time that the launcher takes to spool up before a launch, so it should be ok for now, but long term we will need to find a way to run 4V into the gate of the transistor. For now, sticking with the suspiciously ~warm~ transistor next to the sensitive electronics. Safety first!
