Change title to OpenDRI Index and change logo #247

Open pzwsk opened 6 years ago

pzwsk commented 6 years ago

Issues: 1: the name of the website Open Data for Resilience Index is too long and its acronym is similar to Open Data for Resilience Initiative. 2: the logo is not aligned with other products from the Lab. See http://gfdrr.github.io/innovation-lab-brand-guidelines/brand-guidelines/brand-architecture.html

Suggestion: change to OpenDRI Index and follow guidelines for logo

Pros: a closer link to OpenDRI (the Index of OpenDRI) Cons: it only assess one of the indicators of OpenDRI

@vdeparday @gracedoherty your thoughts on this? Thanks

vdeparday commented 6 years ago

I agree with changing it but we need to provide context to people on what OpenDRI is.

gracedoherty commented 6 years ago

I've toyed with the idea of making it one word: OpenDRIndex. And having Index be a different color than OpenDR. Not a fan of how there's so much alternation of upper and lower case though.

We'll need to spell out what OpenDRI is in the tagline.

pzwsk commented 6 years ago

OpenDRIndex would be difficult to pronounce, no?

Some suggestions for Logo, taking into account Labs guidelines

And a quick preview on the homepage with suggestion of new tagline

@oncletom would be interested in having your thoughts on this as well, also might be useful to test during interviews.

Best

@pzwsk I'm working to change logo SVG image...

pzwsk commented 6 years ago

Hi @dedandy, thanks, but which one? we still have to decide for the logo

dedandy commented 6 years ago

hi @pzwsk blue and red is balanced with other red website color for me. Blue and gray are just a bit cold and, maybe correct with the homepage but, in this case will be better switch color of menu and structure of all site with guidelines...

Now I pushed following your example and also in this case the "I" of Index has another different "serif" type following http://gfdrr.github.io/innovation-lab-brand-guidelines/website/structural-elements/navigation-bar.html

thom4parisot commented 6 years ago

This is not an issue which is planned for the current sprint so there is no need to address its implementation right now.

pzwsk commented 6 years ago

Ok thanks @dedandy but agree with @oncletom this is still something to be validated and not to be implemented in current stage.

Also, would like to check if we are still in contact with designer who did the guidelines. That would be helpful.

The blue and red combination are a fusion, I don't think they should be mixed together. OpenDRI and OpenDRI Index have two very different brand palettes. If we are going to change the Index colors to align with OpenDRI, then we have to get rid of the red, it doesn't fit the palette. We can use the video featured on OpenDRI's About page to decide an appropriate color combination (since a designer already took the time to figure this out, let's not reinvent the wheel). https://opendri.org/about/

I see some nice muted oranges in that first animation. Notice that any reds featured in this video are more of a faded red or magenta (e.g. the fire animation, 0:10).

vdeparday commented 6 years ago

I agree that Red and Blue like this clashes a bit. However, I think the entire website is developed with the orange palette do it may be better to align the logo with that, rather than having to change the whole website.

How about making the two Index colors blue (like OpenDRI) and muted orange (like the OpenDRI About video).

Text logo: "OpenDRI Index", where OpenDRI is blue and Index is muted orange. Existing circle logo: change orange to muted orange, change red to blue. Website: change anything red to muted orange. That shouldn't take long to do. Once we see how that looks, we can decide whether we need to change the existing blues to the true OpenDRI blue.
