Home page: use new indicators for datasets, open data and countries #431

Closed pzwsk closed 5 years ago

pzwsk commented 5 years ago

Needs to make it indicators consistent between each other:

Currently, users can read the indicators this way: X datasets, including Y % open data, covering Y countries

thom4parisot commented 5 years ago

What would be the key indicators?

I'm not sure the homepage has to reflect X open datasets, Y restricted, Z closed and 22 countries.

Things I see valuable in the index:

These stats are currently read from api/stats.

pzwsk commented 5 years ago

Something useful for discussion here is the GFDRR Strategy :

to make disaster risk information openly accessible at the district level in all its countries of engagement.

My suggestion is therefore to have on the home the following indicators:

Another good indicator might be the number of people we can support / we cannot support because of open / closed data.

Regarding the hazards, the aim is more to communicate which hazards we cover maybe with the list of hazards as icons similar to TH! website http://thinkhazard.org/en/

cc @vdeparday @gracedoherty @stufraser1 would be great to have your view on this

thom4parisot commented 5 years ago

👍

Number of countries fully covered (zero unknown)

There are none at the moment if I'm looking at the right figure on https://index.opendri.org/countries.html. The lowest unknown is 8, for Greece, then there are 4 countries around 12, 6 around 17, etc.

gracedoherty commented 5 years ago

What do you think of below. The percentages would be in circles corresponding to the openness color (green, yellow, red, gray).

TRACKING OPEN DATA FOR RESILIENCE Discover which disaster risk data are open, restricted, or closed in your area

566 datasets in 44 countries and counting (25%) Open Data (30%) Restricted (20%) Closed (25%) Unknown [ explore countries ] [ submit a dataset ]

pzwsk commented 5 years ago

I like the idea!

Some comments on your proposal though:

thom4parisot commented 5 years ago

Is the "Unknown" metric valuable for the homepage?

Which indicators are you willing to have an impact on? And how is the index a unique tool to make this happen?

pzwsk commented 5 years ago

Thanks, I would consider the number of unknowns a secondary indicator.

What we want to have a impact on is the number of datasets added on the website, the number of countries covered, and the resulting open data indicators.

What about this then?

The 566 and 44 should stand out. I found them more engaging when they were standalone.

There are other aspects of the homepage that I'd like to change. I think the background photo makes it too busy. And the Index logo should be more prominent (or at least "Open Data for Resilience Index" should appear somewhere prominent). Is it too late for a redesign of the homepage as a whole?

pzwsk commented 5 years ago

Thanks Grace, I agree with your points

Let's do it step by step:

I was also thinking about a way to show hazard info - maybe as icons;

Hi I've been following this conversation, and agree with Grace's suggestion of colour coding the % figures. For me the text in the screenshot doesn't make sense ('566 disaster risk data' doesn't read correctly) but ultimately the numbers are lost and its too wordy I think, so I agree with Grace's: 'TRACKING OPEN DATA FOR RESILIENCE + Discover which disaster risk data are open, restricted, or closed in your area'

I think the 'and counting' in '566 datasets in 44 countries and counting' might not be clearly interpreted by non-native English speakers. Could it be clearer? Alternatives (though some might have the same problem): 'So far: # datasets in # countries' 'To date: # datasets in # countries' 'As of [todays date]: # datasets in # countries'

For the hazard icons: could you include a row of icons, with the # datasets directly below? I think would look quite tidy. Would be useful I think to include exposure and base data as an icon too.

Let's do it step by step:

  • For this issue, let's find a nice way of showing the following indicators (nb of datasets, nb of countries, % of open, restricted, closed). I found 5 bubbles was too many but agree with the lack of emphasis in my last proposal.
  • For logo and picture, also agree, but let's wait for the Lab comm and design consultant;

I was also thinking about a way to show hazard info - maybe as icons;

Hi, I would like to implement and close this issue before end of contract.

@oncletom if you still have some badnwith, could you please make an updated proposal for indicators based on @gracedoherty and @stufraser1 feedback and implement?

Regarding icons, we will implement this in a next issue with help of the comm / designer.

Best

thom4parisot commented 5 years ago

I will have a look at it today and make a proposal.
