As per title.

I leave it as a draft. Not sure if it should go in v1 (i.e. we release v1.0.1) or not.

Thanks for the discussion. I understand much better these changes and they all make sense to me!

I think we should make this a v1 release as the API changes will have consequences for any serious users.
