I've read the information from the following two links:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/612912/how-to-re-enable-the-systray-indicator-panel-after-latest-updates http://www.webupd8.org/2015/05/on-demand-system-tray-for-ubuntu.html

First I installed using the ppa repository and then I installed from github with make and sudo make install. In both instances when I middle click and go into "static" mode, no systray icons are displayed anywhere. In floating mode, I can see the icons.

Look, you have a bug like this? - https://github.com/GGleb/indicator-systemtray-unity/issues/3

No they're not blurry. There's simply nothing that appears in static mode. It appears to be the same problem outlined by Patty Landau in the comment here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/612912/how-to-re-enable-the-systray-indicator-panel-after-latest-updates#comment867211_613221

However, updating Indicator-systemtray-unity seemed to fix his problem; I'm using the most recent version and my problem is not fixed.
