GLD needs to be unique. A custom texture pack would separate GLD from other servers. Additionally, GLD is a desert. In deserts, lack of water is more deadly than lack of food. I recommend http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/hydrate/ to add another level of difficulty

Already got a thirst plugin :) Works pretty good.

Texture pack, eh.. Personal preference generally. All the packs I have ever used generally look 'good'.. but I always fall back to the default look. Maybe we would change one or two items to suit the server if we did.
