Evaluate non-User-Guide examples #89

It is likely that many of the non-User-Guide examples in this repo need updating. We should evaluate the existing examples figuring out which ones we want to keep, which ones need updating, and making plans to update them and get them into a CI process so we can make sure they don't silently break.

This has been resolved by the creation of an "unmaintained" folder where such examples can live without consequence.
