gim error on CentOS 8.1 with AMD FirePro S7150x2 #33

Open ph0llux opened 4 years ago

ph0llux commented 4 years ago

Hi,

I've added the following lines to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=[...] amd_iommu=on pci=realloc

I've built and install the driver, according to the README.md, with the gim.sh-script. I've also blacklisted the amdgpu-module. Know, if I load the module with modprobe gim

the lspci-command only shows me the hardware-gpus, but not the virtual gpus: lspci | grep "VGA" 03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tonga XT GL [FirePro S7150] 04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tonga XT GL [FirePro S7150] 66:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ASPEED Technology, Inc. ASPEED Graphics Family (rev 41)

I got the following errors: dmesg| grep "gim error" [ 20.394094] gim error:(map_mmio:52) adapter has no suitable MMIO region [ 20.395372] gim error:(gim_read_vbios:239) Invalid AMD VBIOS [ 20.395388] gim error:(set_new_adapter:631) Failed to read vbios [ 20.395409] gim error:(map_mmio:52) adapter has no suitable MMIO region [ 20.395487] gim error:(gim_read_vbios:239) Invalid AMD VBIOS [ 20.395501] gim error:(set_new_adapter:631) Failed to read vbios [ 1896.494751] gim error:(map_mmio:52) adapter has no suitable MMIO region [ 1896.494931] gim error:(gim_read_vbios:239) Invalid AMD VBIOS [ 1896.494946] gim error:(set_new_adapter:631) Failed to read vbios [ 1896.494968] gim error:(map_mmio:52) adapter has no suitable MMIO region [ 1896.495035] gim error:(gim_read_vbios:239) Invalid AMD VBIOS [ 1896.495050] gim error:(set_new_adapter:631) Failed to read vbios [ 2507.741053] gim error:(map_mmio:52) adapter has no suitable MMIO region [ 2507.741273] gim error:(gim_read_vbios:239) Invalid AMD VBIOS [ 2507.741288] gim error:(set_new_adapter:631) Failed to read vbios [ 2507.741308] gim error:(map_mmio:52) adapter has no suitable MMIO region [ 2507.741377] gim error:(gim_read_vbios:239) Invalid AMD VBIOS [ 2507.741396] gim error:(set_new_adapter:631) Failed to read vbios`

has anyone an idea, how can I fix this?

convergenceboy commented 3 years ago

Did you ever figure this out? I am seeing the same issue: gim detects PFs but never VFs

ph0llux commented 3 years ago

Hi, sorry, I forgot to put this in here. It was my own fault for forgetting to activate a few options in the BIOS. The driver itself is running now, but I'm struggling with crashes with the appropriate Windows drivers for the Windows guests.

Hello, there is a crash code? I've also had specific crashes.

I'm seeing similar outputs on my end. Had to update a few things in gim_ modules to compile on later kernels.

Could you name some of the settings you had forgotten in the BIOS @ph0llux? Suspect I may have done the same.

update

I got it fixed on my end. Turned out, on my given BIOS revision; SRI-OV would flip from Enabled to Disabled upon Save&Exit of the BIOS settings. Upgrading to the latest & 'greatest' (not true all of the time), I am now able to persist SRI-OV to subsequent bootups and I am now looking at the following using utils/gru:

Currently, I'm fighting against the AMDPRO Guest drivers for Win10.

update 2

Beat the Windows/Driver situation. QEMU/KVM Windows 10 1551 AMDPRO Guest drivers for Win10x64 (Q2 2020) SeaBIOS Q35

Hi Kasperlewau,

Sorry that I only got around to answering you now. I also forgot to activate SRIOV in the BIOS - then you had the same problems as me. Great that you could solve that.

How did you solve the problem with the Windows driver? Unfortunately I am still stuck there...:(

Hi, sorry, I forgot to put this in here. It was my own fault for forgetting to activate a few options in the BIOS. The driver itself is running now, but I'm struggling with crashes with the appropriate Windows drivers for the Windows guests.

Hello, there is a crash code? I've also had specific crashes.

there is a crash code in the windows device manager: "error code 43".

Returning to this once more. Sorry that took a long time @ph0llux.

Did you have any luck in getting things up and running?

I had a backup of the screenshot I posted above, unfortunately I've lost the QCOW2 and thus I had to retrace my steps from years back. And what a struggle it is.

Tried out multiple revisions of the gim module built against kernels 5.9 through 6.5. So far nothing appears to be playing ball.

This roughly outlines the steps I've taken to try and get back to a working state:

Step 1: Configure BIOS (SR-IOV enabled, CSM enabled, Above 4G decoding enabled, IOMMU enabled).
Step 2: Create the VM (Q35, BIOS, Assign 1x VGPU).
Step 3: Install Win10 (Enterprise, LTSC, 2021).
Step 4: Install AMD guest drivers (2020 Q2.1, June).

Monitoring the output of list in ./utils/gru/gru I can clearly see that the VGPU goes from Available -> Active, only to jump back to Available a few seconds later and the dreaded Code 43 shows up in Windows.

I'm still working on it, will report back when I find a working combination.

Update: At my wits end. Partially nuked the system, will attempt to attack it from a fresh install of the host system sometime soon. :/

Update: Fixed!

Turns out the offending piece was the Q35 BIOS version. Back in 2020 I believe I was using 6.x, nowadays the latest on my platform is 8.2. Downgrading fixed the situation.

Hi kasperlewau,

thanks for your response.

Did you have any luck in getting things up and running?

No, but with your posted fix, I'll try this again (with the appropriate older Q35 BIOS version) in a few days. Sounds great that this old card could be able to run (the alternative options are just nVidia cards with a annual payment -which I will definitely boycott). I'll let you now, if I achieve any progress. ;)
