This is a feature request to auto-generate a properly formated citation for a dataset. At a minimum this would be plain text that could be copied and pasted, but something more sophisticated might be an embeddable widget or a pingback mechanism to help showcase reuse and generate usage metrics. The work to establish the Get Data button and its history should be relevant here too.
The idea of citations has been brought up in a few other contexts, such as providing an embed code for a dataset and guidance for featuring datasets in roll-outs, but this issue is meant to focus specifically on providing the formatting and metadata for a formal citation as a feature on data.gov. This would also be a good place to discuss best practices for citations, perhaps details and examples of things like DataCite formatting and schema and possible crosswalks from the DCAT/POD schema
This issue will be updated with a mockup depicting a possible MVP.
