Demo Feedback: Outside of domain links #246

When you open a link on a web site that goes out of your domain (in this case digital.gov), I believe that there is a federal requirement that it should open in a new window or tab. That is a “visual indicator” that you are leaving the site and privacy policies on the site that you are going to will not necessarily be the same as the domain that you are leaving. Some of the links under Additional Resources don’t open in a new tab/window such as the “burden calculator” by the Department of Health and Human Services.

This is related to closed issue #213 . @jeremyzilar do you know the policy regarding this?

So the best practice (across the web) is to not open links in a new tab. It is not great for users, and not great for accessibility.

The way to control for this is to:

  1. link to only the things that are worth your readers time — this is what makes you a trusted resource. People will thank you for it.
  2. make it clear in the copy that you're sending people to another destination
