Set up automated testing to simplify code reviews/pull requests, catch bugs, improve reliability etc.

Will also encourage new users to write their own tests for each new project from this template.

[ ] Write skeleton tests for existing functions
[ ] add text to readme to encourage users to write tests and follow test-driven development
[ ] add github actions to run automated tests on commit
