what is the status of this issue? we want to use this package and are waiting for the melodic release.

I'm afraid no maintenance can be expected for this repo. Last commit on the main branch seems to be 5 years ago. I cast +1 for moving on to list this as OrphanedPackage and let the community maintain. @knorth55 Would you be interested in initiating that?

To be clear, I asked you to start an action :)

I could take an initiative, but right now don't have enough motivation so I can't promise if I'll get to it. But if you/someone else can start then I'm happy to back up.
