Solutions tried:

1. Restarting the game
2. Reinstalling java
3. Restarting my computer
4. Starting a new game (with cheats enabled by default)
5. Reinstalling minecraft

Update: reinstalling a fresh gregtech installation does not create the issue, I'm going to test with ftb utilities.

It seems to only occur when ftb utilities (and yes, I'm using the version recommended with gregtech) is installed.

The issue does not occur with the latest version of ftb utils and ftb library. The custom gregtech version appears to be broken somehow.

EDIT: Nvm, the most recent ftb utils seems not to be loading at all, so that might be the reason I'm not having an issue.

Okay, I was using the download for the wrong minecraft version. The non-forked 1.7.10 ftb utils and lib version also suffer from the same issue. At this point, I'm not sure if it's an ftb lib or gregtech issue.
