5 years ago I discussed with Paul (rovyko) who's working on rovyko/historian and he told me a few interesting things related to this issue.
Here's a summary and additional things:
- Chrome allows favicon access outside of the webextension API, but Firefox does not. There's a good bug report here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1315616.
- The Google/DDG favicon API now requires extra permissions and querying the site directly can also be complicated
- Idea: bundle the top 10k or so favicons with the extension.

this one requires a captcha
Just like the Firefox History browser window, there's the favicon, it's fun. Not sure exactly how this can be achieved. I don't think fetching all urls again would be a clean solution.
