If you use your Ice Lasso attack while just about to fall off the map, and promptly do fall off the map, the game repeatedly spams the sound of the lasso being launched & also repeatedly resets your meter to 0.
When you're put back in the last checkpoint everything resolves itself and it's as usual from there.
