Installation of Gallium 3.0 alpha Fails on TERRA #443

Tried twice to get the installation to finish but, on both occasions, my ASUS C202SA exited the installation with an error. I also had no trackpad or wireless USB mouse support, so just to get the installation started, I had to use keyboard shortcuts.

After that, the installation finished copying files and started configuring other things (like apt) and exited with an error. It couldn't send error reports since I didn't have WiFi configured yet, so I thought I'd let you know.

Installer crashes are usually caused by failing install media (or a bad write to the media).

The wiki: https://wiki.galliumos.org/Installing/Creating_Bootable_USB has a good set of troubleshooting steps (see very bottom of page).

Also, if you are using any non-default install options, perhaps try again without. I have installed the 3.0alpha1 ISO on a C202SA TERRA, using all default install options, so it should be possible.

If the errors do recur, check /var/log/syslog.. Ubiquity (the installer) does a good job of logging progress and details.

I'll try and redownload it and remake the flash drive on my windows machine through rufus. I was using unetbootin, but I'm honestly not too familiar with it.

I downloaded it again and made a new USB drive through rufus on Windows (using DD mode), but the installation still failed three times. MD5 was correct. I even remade the flash before trying for the last time and same result. I used default options all the way through for these last three attempts (No third-party, no Wifi, Just saying continue, continue, continue...). I attached the syslog of the last attempt I made. Maybe you can make heads or tails out of it.

The USB could be bad, I suppose, since now I can't even reinstall Gallium 2.1 with rufus or etcher (I went ahead and tried etcher just in case). I don't have another USB stick to try, but it seems to always fail when the installation window says "scanning CD-ROM" or something similar.

Yeah, it's most likely the USB drive, unfortunately. If you have a Unix-like OS available (linux, macOS), we can verify the USB drive. I don't know how to do it on Windows. :(

I actually bought a new USB drive just to test it out, and it still failed both installs. (2.1 and 3.0a). I was at a loss, so I had to install Debian as it still gave me mouse and keyboard support. I'm not sure what was going on, but Debian worked the first time. I'll wait until the alpha updates next time, and try again. Sorry I can't tell you more. I'm new to Gallium.

@Egunning OK, thanks for testing. The only significant error I see in the syslog is one that suggests a problem with the written image to USB. But it sounds like you used a proper tool, in the proper way (Rufus/dd mode), so that should not be the problem.

This would imply that either the image is bad, or the USB is unreliable. I've tested the image successfully on the same model, so I have a reasonable degree of confidence in that. But I can't explain your results either.

Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get things working with Debian. I'll leave this issue open for a while, in case we see anything like it elsewhere. Thanks again!

I don't know much but could it be a problem with the UEFI firmware? what if you were to reinstall that?
