The boards themselves aren't reliable or unreliable - they're essentially just wires printed on a board (no circuitry or anything fancy).
What happens is the SP2 contacts are a little loose, so sometimes when you jostle the GC it comes out of contact.
The best solution for that is to put a little solder on the contacts so that you get a nice, tight fit.
