Q&A: Can I leave in the SD2SP2 when playing games normally? #16

Would leaving the sd2sp2 in the console get in the way with me trying to play games normally?

You can leave it in. \ Games will play normally.

You can think of all of the Memory Card (EXI) and Serial Port slots on a GameCube much like modern day USB - you can plug anything into any of them, it's up to the software (on the game disc, or Swiss, or other homebrew) to decide what to do with them.

Unless a game says on the box that you're supposed to plug something into SP2 to play it, then it will just ignore the Serial Port 2 slot.

However, I don't think that they ever created a game that actually used SP2, which is why it was removed in the 2nd revision of the GameCube DOL-101.

Keywords: SD to Serial Port 2 adapter

Correction: Phantasy Star Online (PSO) used Serial Port 2 for the Broadband adapter:

(so you'd need to swap the SD2SP2 with the Network Adapter to play PSO in network mode, or to use it for hacks)
