Q&A: SD Gecko vs SD2SP2 - Which? And Why? #19

Which to choose?

I successfully launched Swiss on my Gamecube using the Swiss card in memory card A and then the Legend of Zelda exploit. Is the Gecko necessary if I’m using a SD2SP2 adapter with an attached microSD card?

SD Gecko and SD2SP2 are interchangeable in all cases EXCEPT:

SD Gecko SD2SP2
Swiss >= v0.5
DOL-001
1MB - 2GB SD
4GB - 2TB SDHC, SDXC UHC-III
GCMM >= v1.5 ⚠️
(hold Z to access)

GCMM <= v1.4f
Emulators

⚠️
(mixed support)
Use Both Card Slots
Quick & Easy Access
DOL-101
Action Replay (Boot)
Old (Pre-2019) Homebrew

I prefer the SD Gecko because it's more convenient, but the SD2SP2 is the new hotness and it works just as well. I think some people feel like it looks cleaner to hide the SD card away - and there are a few games that require two memory cards (for replays or some such, I believe).

Can I Use Either? Yes, Mostly

Some homebrew (old emulators, media players, etc) don't work with the SD2SP2.

Some homebrew will default to SD2SP2 and won't let you switch once it's selected.

Can I Use Both? Yes, Mostly

Swiss (v0.5+), GCMM (v1.5+), and some other homebrew allow you to switch between the SD Gecko and SD2SP2 either seamlessly, or with a restart.

Card Size - Swiss

You can use ANY SIZE CARD with either the SD Gecko or SD2SP2 if you can already get into Swiss

Action Replay: SD Gecko + 2GB Card

If you only have Action Replay, you must use a 2GB or smaller card in the SD Gecko.

Once you boot into Swiss, you can use any size card.
