Scaling/aspect ratio issue #113

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
so recently i went to go to play "Virtua Racer" and i noticed something, that
there is a glitch in the "Sega" logo/font,so i thought maybe it was using a
corrected aspect ratio when in the "Original" or something of that nature or
maybe thinking the emulator was a ntsc-u,i thought maybe this was a minor
glitch in the scaling so i changed the aspect ratio to "Manual Scale" and it
seems to have fix the problem,i noticed this in a few other games of the "E"
region well anyways here are some of the details,if you need me to give you a
few names of some of the other games, then do say so

You never played these games on a real Mega Drive or Genesis, do you ?

Because this is how it was displayed, the original console did not have scaling
hardware and the active video width was always the same, just horizontal
resolution could be changed: as a result, games using the 256 pixels-wide mode
would appear stretched like that on TV screen, for most of them it is only
visible at sega logo because they used some generic sega routine that was
designed for 320 pixels-wide mode and they didn't go into the trouble of
modifying it.

So this is perfectly normal and accurate behavior.

actually i used to own the models 1 and 2 genesis's and the model 1 and 2 sega
cd's,but yea ive never played the european version of "virtua racing" nor the
sega mega drive version,i've only got to try out the sega 32x ntsc-u
version, and yeah i kind expected it to be something like that causing this
issue,so not to sound like a douche,is there a way to work around this issue?im
guessing that you or someone working on the emulator would have to create a
corrected form of the 4:3 aspect ratio correct?more so a forced form of it?

Again, you didn't understand, it IS already correct, there are NO ISSUES and
this is not because it is the PAL version, it does the same on any genesis
version (regarding 32x version, this is a whole different code and all 32x
games are using the 320 pixels mode so they are not affected), it's just the
way the game was programmed.

And the way to work around that (if you don't like how it is stretched on a
title screen that is displayed like maybe 2 seconds, the rest of the game being
fine !) is already there, you even found it yourself: use STRETCHED aspect and
asjust the scale factors. However, this is definitively NOT accurate, there is
no way I'm gonna make this default scaling, the option is there for a good
reason.

Regarding PAL games being stretched VERTICALLY, this is also perfectly normal,
PAL standard has more lines than NTSC but vertical resolution is genereally
fixed, which means that, on a PAL Mega Drive, games will be displayed with
black bars at top/bottom of the TV screen.

If you don't like that, force the console region to USA or JAPAN in emulator
settings to emulate a NTSC console. When set to AUTO, the emulator
automatically detects the appropriate console region based on the ROM you just
loaded.

If the game does not like that, it means it is region protected and will only
run on a PAL Mega Drive, your only solutions is either to patch the ROM, use
appropriate Game Genie codes (if you know what you are doing) or simply use
NTSC version of the game.
