Sound issues in Wonderboy 5 #86

What steps will reproduce the problem?
I don't know exactly when it occurs... I was playing Wonderboy in
MonsterLand (best MegaDrive Game ever ^^) and after some time there was a
slight "scratching" noise in the background. Music was playing normally but
with this strange noise in background. (Sounds like bad radio reception)
I reloaded the game (the whole rom) and sound was working fine again.

Sorry that i don't know exactly when this happens, but maybe you can figure
out what's happening?

Btw, i've also noticed a slight stuttering, but this happens very seldom...
and only for <1sec, but it's noticeably.

I'm using the latest SVN Build (compiled 2 days ago) and haven't changed
any settings in the emu

It's still in the beta stages, so issues like that are to be expected. But 
yeah, I
can confirm this issue and hopefully will be resolved once the next official 
version
is released (supposedly very soon).

Yep, just wanted to let ekeeke know.
I'm working as quality engineering engineer, hence i'm used to point even 
obviously
issues out =)
But for a beta the overall quality is superior, besides some small issues like 
this one!

Thank for the input, i will have a look into it. Sound core us not in beta 
stage anymore, should be close toassaa perfection now so if you notice 
anyissue in games, please report it... Now about this one, try disabling 
low-pass filtering and see if that changes. If not, try playing withsound 
options.

Glad to hear that! Heck, you could say that if Kega Fusion was ever ported to 
the Wii
and Gamecube, this would be it! Looking forward to the next version!

A question for eke-eke while this thread is up:

What settings would you personally recommend for best and loudest sound 
quality? I 
dunno if its just me and my stupidity but that HD FM thing seems to make it 
sound 
more quiet.

Hq fm does not change the output volume, it resamples the original 
chip samplerate to the wii native frequency, using a very accurate 
resampler. Rolloff adjusts the cutoff of the resampler so try to set it to 
max (0.999) for less frequency cutting. You can also adjust FM & PSG 
chips volume independently but the default setting should be the 
most accurate, i compared with a real mega drive hooked on the same 
tv  and sound was not louder.

I'm having trouble reproducing this issue (everything is fine for me and I 
remember I
already finished this game on this emu without noticing any sound issues). This 
does
not seem to be related to the sound core emulation (the game does not make 
anything
special) but might be a bug with the new sound mixing engine in some specific 
conditions.

Anyway, I'd need more infos about the configuration (ROM version, region 
setting, TV
mode, audio settings, etc) and more details on where/when it happens (a 
savestate
would be ery appreciated).

I didn't change any settings of genplus. (i don't know what this these sound 
settings do so i didn't want to touch them :))
The Sound glitches happend have happened only once yet, i've played 3 times 
since 
then and everything worked fine...
I've  also tried I also tried (wg. back then)to save state and restart genplus 
back 
then and the issues were gone...
ROM Version, i'm not sure, i think it might be PAL Version but i'll have to 
check it 
to be sure. I guess it wouldn't be legal, if i attached the ROM here?
I'm paying attention to the game sound but this happened only once. hä?
Please do not waste to much time on this issue, i'll tell you if this happens 
again. 
(and hopefully i'll be able to discover when this happens).

@nintendonerd1889: You said you can confirm this issue. Do you have this 
reproducable? Please tell ekeeke when this sound glitches appear at your wii

What I need to know is if you were running in 50Hz or 60hz.
->Video Settings-> TV Mode
->System Settings-> Region
You can also load the ROM then open the ROM Information screen then tell me the 
last
line (Region Code).

If you cannot reproduce the issue and it only happened once, it could be 
related to
how long you played the game (without reloading state or entering the menu), 
maybe
soundbuffer got squeezed after a while for an unknown reason, try returning 
where
this happened to you and leave the game playing until it happens again. i'm not
really convinced it is a serious issue though.

This
issue doesn't necessarily happen in this particular game, but take any of the 
Sonic
games; every once in a while, the jumping sound effect (among others) sounds as 
if it
gets out of sync, making an odd squealing sound (maybe occurring every 45 
seconds to
one minute or so)It's as if the sound gets interrupted for one second or so. 
But then
again, I was using an older beta revision and may have been fixed already.

never noticed any of the issue you are describing, sound in Sonic is perfect in 
my ears

This kind of audio bug report can be a little frustating because :

(1) bug description is often very vague and bound to user appreciation (happen 
in
every games ? when ? squealing sound ? interrupted or out of sync ?)
(2) it is quite hard or impossible to reproduce it (sound skipping every 45s is 
a big
issue imo, hard not to notice it)
(3) audio sync issues should be non-existant now and the FM/PSG emulation 
should not
have any remaining bugs (again, the GUI is in beta stage, the emulator itself 
is NOT)

Are you sure this is not a native game bug that occurs when repeating a 
particular
sound effect (jump for example ?), this happens often with FM channels 
synthesis.

What I meant was it happened every 45 seconds; it doesn't last for 45 seconds. 
But,
as you said, the issue is no longer noticeable, so that's good. Perhaps if I 
can find
some luck, I'll compile from SVN and give it a whirl.

Yesterday i've play i played for more than 2 hours.. (wonderboy) There weren't 
any 
sound issues. I've tried to save/load 
state, and i've played more than a half hour without saving / loading. After 
playing 
i've also started a new game, and let shion stand around at the beginning of 
the 
game and let the wii turned turned on for about a hour.

My Settings:
Video: PAL 60
Game: Wonderboy in Monster World - USA

I can't explain why this happened the first (and only) time... :(
I also noticed the stuttering nintendonerd1889 mentioned, during this one time, 
but 
i also had this "bad radio reception" noise in the background too. Like he 
said, 
every ~40 seconds the sound stumbled. But normally this doesn't happen 
normally, 
only this
one time.
I've also tried it with Sonic, but there were no issues either.

As soon as i find out WHEN this happens, i'll tell you immediatly.

(As already mentioned, i'm using the latest SVN build...)

Ok, let me know if this happen again. For teh time being, I'm closing this issue
since nobody is able to reproduce it. I can always re-open it when we have more
detailled report.
