On this page, you will find data from the various WordPress meetup groups that exist, or have existed, extracted from meetup.com. You can learn about the group names, their links, the country they belong to, their location, whether they are active or not, and other details.

https://www.wpopendata.org/events/meetup/groups/

Could this help @patriciabt to shape the next steps? I was reminded on our last huddle.

Edit: wpopendata.org is a project by @javiercasares among others.

Sorry, I wasn’t aware that you are also around. Thank you.

jesusyesares commented 3 months ago

Don't worry :D

patriciabt commented 3 months ago

@carstingaxion thank you and I know about the opendata project.

However we had a call with Angela and Mike, and we just have to work on an external site for now, with 5-10 people from interested groups and we already have them on the list above.

The rest will be done later, when feedback will be given by the people participating in the test, and GatherPress implemented on wordpress org network as a pilot. Meta will then import from existing groups.

We cannot bypass what Angela requires first

javiercasares commented 3 months ago

If you want some infrastructure to create a WordPress Multisite and prepare everything for some GatherPress, I can help with that (in my own infra, or we can ask if any company wants to sponsor this from the Hosting Team).

patriciabt commented 3 months ago

@javiercasares Thx, the site is setup on my server, if needed at a later point, we can migrate it to yours

patriciabt commented 3 months ago

To everyone, the demo/test site is ready, it has been moved to a new server (see above, thx @javiercasares)

We had to setup a test site, for now not on the WordPress org network, but self-hosted, before to be able to ask the Meta team to step in and implement it on the network. We need real-world tests and feedback!

For all organizers who showed interest to participate into the tests, please read the information on the homepage: https://demo.gatherpress.org/

And sign-up for testing on the form here: https://demo.gatherpress.org/join-the-gatherpress-tests/ We will then create a group site for you.

You can also read @angelajin comment on the proposal.

Please everyone, test it and give us your feedback! This is required to move on to the pilot program! Thanks a lot in advance

patriciabt commented 2 months ago

Ok, we discovered that the new users didn't get any email when their site were created (so I need to then send a reset password link, which is OK but I didn't know), and also that the username was taking the new site name (instead of letting them define their username, which would be better so they could choose the same as their .org account)

@javiercasares can you do something about those 2 points in the Duplicator Pro addon you added to duplicate sites? Many thanks in advance

I'll be testing it extensively this summer when we'll build our local website (we're waiting for validation from wp.com to use their paid plan for free following Matt's announcement during his WCEU keynote).

I have a feeling this could be proposed as a solid alternative in the future. Packaging a free meetup website hosting + the use of GatherPress could be suggested either alongside or in place of meetup.com.

I thought it might even be a fun challenge to run during a meetup with the local community members! :)

patriciabt commented 2 months ago

@jaz-on the use on .com would defeat some of the benefits we would get with integration within .org (hours of contributions by organisers, list of activities on our profiles, etc). On .org, all groups will also have a site. Maybe this is something to be discussed out of this ticket, which is specifically for groups interested into the pilot program we are asking on .org

Obviously, it would be a great idea. But why limit the adoption of GatherPress to the implementation of a .org architecture?

I'm just pointing out .com free plan now exists for meetups orgs like right now, not in several months (years?). I'm not saying it should be the sustainable/long-term solution! :)

Let's be realistic, that would require lots of effort from the Meta team. There are several reasons why this might be a complex proposition: the time/expertise it would take to deploy such an architecture (accesses and maintenance will be very hard topics to tackle), the technical limitations of such a project for each meetup websites (similar to the actual WordCamps multisite). In the meantime, the adoption of GatherPress of autonomous meetup websites will maybe help by showing the needs for a centralised/long-term hosting solution handled on .org side. I'm just saying that these two thoughts don't necessarily conflict. The most important goal should be for GatherPress to be adopted by meetups orgs, whatever plaftorm they want to use to host their meetup group datas. :)

Writing down these lines, I'm thinking maybse your idea is using GatherPress as a central tool in the idea of launching a centralised platform for meetups as a copy of the meetup.com platform architecture. If so I've misunderstood the aim of this project (I thought it was a plugin made to launch a decentralize network of independent websites for each meetups).

patriciabt commented 2 months ago

@jaz-on As said, this is a conversation not related to this ticket, so maybe let's start another conversation (for example on our Slack). This ticket is for groups with interest to participate in the pilot program (the one on .org). For me, an important aspect is to address invisible contributions (organizers, speakers, etc) which can only be done on .org (like WordCamp sites). Now anyone can do as you say with independant websites, but then continue to be uncredited for their work. It's possible with GatherPress, but it's not the scope of the pilot asked in the proposal.
