Here's a possible UI treatment, I think in line with what you are suggesting:
I may continue to iterate but wanted to share it!
Some other ideas that may be worth considering:
1) Showing a pause button in the middle whenever there is an active timer (this has the benefit of the timers being associated with the categories -- right now the meaning of the timer under the pause button is not clear from a glance / screen shot)
2) Moving the "100% men" chart to under the pause button; moving the active timer to be under the "A dude is talking" instead of under the pause button.
We discussed and would like to NOT change the text of the buttons, but instead show a red pause button in between the buttons when there is an active timer.
We would like to still change the "Who's Talking" text to reflect the person who is actively talking.
I know you can pause by hitting the button a second time, but that's not apparent to users, and I didn't know until I was told. Today we got this comment on the blog (https://www.genderavenger.com/blog/are-men-talking-too-much): "Please add a Pause button so that when donuts and 'covfefe' arrive the timer can be suspended until the action resumes. Thank you"
Maybe instead of a third button, maybe the text on the button you want to pause could change "pause" when it's timing to indicate it's secondary use?
