This is far from intuitive. Is it for the geeks among us, or for the EOS community at large? I tried... :)

Hey, you are correct that the assumption made is you are already familiar with deploying smart contracts and the eosio.token contract to use this. We will be looking at developing a tutorial in the future so its more accessible to everyone.
