Elevation: does it allow ranges? #389

In the GBWG DwC MIxS mapping, we're wondering if elevation functions like depth and altitude, in that it allows ranges. This will determine the kind of mapping predicate we'd use.

Right now, we're assuming that ranges are permitted.

Suggest updating the definition or other attributes to be more clear.

That seems like a fair assumption to me, I see no reason why we should exclude ranges.

The current definition of the term is "Elevation of the sampling site is its height above a fixed reference point, most commonly the mean sea level. Elevation is mainly used when referring to points on the earth's surface, while altitude is used for points above the surface, such as an aircraft in flight or a spacecraft in orbit."

This makes no comment on its expected value so no update is required right now. I'm not sure how the Value_syntax field is meant to be formulated to allow ranges, but that will need looking at for all terms that allow ranges.

We are already doing this in the NMDC schema, we can make a PR for this for consideration in mix’s 6

It is not clear from the definition of altitude that it also allows ranges. To clarify for the DwC-MIxS mapping - Is it correct to assume, based on the conversation above, that the altitude key does also permit values that are ranges? @only1chunts

MIxS altitude defintion:

Altitude is a term used to identify heights of objects such as airplanes, space shuttles, rockets, atmospheric balloons and heights of places such as atmospheric layers and clouds. It is used to measure the height of an object which is above the earth's surface. In this context, the altitude measurement is the vertical distance between the earth's surface above sea level and the sampled position in the air
